Kim made his debut as one of BTS's four vocalists on June 13, 2013, with their debut single album 2 Cool 4 Skool. In 2016, Kim released his first co-produced tune, "Awake," a solo single off the album Wings.
Kim's second solo, "Epiphany," was released as a promo for BTS' then-upcoming compilation album Love Yourself: Answer on August 9, 2018. Billboard described the song as a "rising pop-rock tune" with lyrics about self-acceptance and self-love. In October, he and other members of the group were awarded the fifth-class Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit by South Korean President Moon Jae-in.
"Moon," his third solo song with BTS, was published on the 2020 studio album Map of the Soul: 7. "Moon," according to Variety writer Jae-Ha Kim, is a power pop song aimed towards BTS fans. "Moon" peaked at number one on the Gaon Digital List and second on Billboard's US World Digital Singles chart.

Kim, BUMZU, and RM wrote the lyrics, which were inspired by Kim's feelings of anxiousness, doubt, and fatigue. Kim discussed his insecurities about music in a post on the official BTS site, and how those darker emotions motivated him to develop and release the song.
Kim has been a monthly donor to UNICEF Korea since May 2018, preferring that his contributions be kept anonymous at the time. They were eventually made public after he was inducted into the UNICEF Honors Club in May 2019 for contributing over 100 million (about $84,000).
